ACD Ethics and Professionalism Award 2013
The New York Academy of The American College of Dentists is a national organization that has a vision and mission similar to that of the New York Academy of Dentistry. The mission of the College is to advance excellence, ethics, professionalism, and leadership in dentistry.
The American College of Dentists is the oldest major honorary organization for dentists and was founded August 20, 1920 “to elevate the standards of dentistry, to encourage graduate study, and to grant Fellowship to those who have done meritorious work.”
This October, the New York Academy of Dentistry received the “Ethics and Professionalism Award” from the American College of Dentists. The Ethics and Professionalism Award recognizes exceptional contributions by individuals or organizations in the promotion of ethics or professionalism in dentistry. This award was made possible through the generosity of The Jerome B. Miller Family Foundation.
Our immediate Past President Dr. Amy Ludwig accepted the award on behalf of the Academy at the Convocation Ceremony in New Orleans on October 31, 2013. Dr. Thomas Connelly provided the introduction and was kind enough to provide his photographs of the event as well.

President Waugh, fellows and guests:
On behalf of The New York Academy of Dentistry, I would like to thank The American College of Dentists for presenting the 2013 Ethics and Professionalism Award to our organization. / This is a particularly meaningful award for the Academy and its members.
The New York Academy of Dentistry was founded in 1921. /A foundational part of the Academy’s mission statement reads “to uphold the dignity and ethics of our profession.” / In 1993 The American College of Dentists gave a workshop on professional ethics in New York City. Under the leadership of the Academy’s president at that time, /Dr. Joseph Rowan, / the Academy took up the task of helping to develop Ethics Programs, providing financial support and having its fellows serve as facilitators in the area dental schools. /In particular, Dr. Robert Miner, Dr. James Hudson, and Fred Moore all worked tirelessly to make this happen.
In 1996 this course expanded to include Advanced Education Programs in Prosthodontics at New York University, the Manhattan Veterans Administration, New York Hospital Queens, and more recently the University of Connecticut. /The New York Academy of Dentistry was asked to have its facilitators provide Ethics Courses at the Greater New York Dental Meeting and at the New York County and 9th district dental societies. Several courses from two hours to a full day were held until the time that it was mandated by the New York Dental Association that an Ethics Course was required for license renewal. The New York Academy of Dentistry was able to take a lead in the establishment of Professional Ethics courses by being proactive and being well situated to impact the lives of dental students from Columbia University, New York University, Stony Brook and more recently The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
As Dr. Connolly mentioned, all told, 9,000 students and dentists have taken and benefited from these courses since the start of these ongoing programs.
The New York Academy is honored to receive this award and is grateful for the leadership of the American College of Dentists in nurturing Professionalism and Ethics in our wonderful profession.
Thank you all again.
